Wandering by Pinning

Jáchym Šimek, Lukáš Šmejkal

Curated by Eva Slabá

The exhibition project "Wandering by Pinning" by Lukáš Šmejkal and Jáchym Šimek is based on the synthesis of metaphorical images that generally connect the thinking about space (whether landscape or urban) and temporality. In the artists' practice, both of these phenomena appear as a construct, strongly shaped not only by experience, but also by the possibility of expressing this experience in general. Together with the artists, we thus find ourselves in labyrinths in which it is uncertain whether we are dealing with the reconstruction of one perspective of reality or the gradually unfolding delirium of individual episodes. The open, loose structure of the plot of Šmejkal's large-scale canvases and Šimek's sculptural reliefs draws the audience into an illusory environment characterised by a strong sense of movement and a balancing act between abstraction and symbolism. Their practice can thus resemble mapmaking, losing and finding, a pilgrimage at the end of which, apart from the topography of hypnotic visions, we find only more questions: What lies beyond the individual fields delineated by the medium? How to read the gaps in not only visual riddles?
