The catalog provides an overview of texts and photographs from the exhibition RHIZOMATIC SPELL.
Since modernity, we have considered the world we live in as dis-enchanted. The dis-enchanted world is a notion we inherited from Max Weber who in turn appropriated it from Friedrich Schiller’s argumentation on the difference between Greek and Modern life. Like Schiller, Weber saw the modern world as highly rationalized, free from mysteries and symbols due to the technological progress accelerated during the Industrial Revolution. Rationalization permeated through religion, science, economy and state. Nowadays all these areas are dominated by technology, even religion with which capitalism, according to Walter Benjamin, shares its nature. Dis-enchantment also means the alienation of man. Karl Marx, together with Friedrich Engels, described how labor came to be alienated in capitalist society when workers no longer owned the means of production. Humanity then became alienated to the world which it had thought it had known. But technologies are now creating new binds whose character is, in several regards, even more magical and mythological than ever before.
